THE CONDUCTOR'S NOTES

Given the title of this article it seems appropriate that I should bring to your attention the paucity of notes that have been sold in relation to our "Buy a Note" Campaign.

When I first brought up the idea of a Buy a Note Campaign everyone that I spoke with unanimously agreed that this was both a novel and unique way for us as a community to participate in supporting the orchestra. Many people give willingly to the orchestra by buying season ticket subscriptions and then in addition adding a few dollars here and there. If you look at the list of contributors in each concert program book you will see that the vast majority of contributors are in the $0 - $50 category. By comparison with orchestras around the country this places an enormous burden on our board to raise the rest of the money needed to keep the orchestra funded and the music playing.

The "Buy a Note" Campaign is designed in such a way that people can contribute a little or a lot as often as they wish. When you have a little extra money at the end of the month maybe you can drop a few more dollars into the jar at the next concert. It is hopefully a stimulating and exciting way for people to see how every note contributes to building up a piece of music.

Our upcoming concert is quite a change from the big "splash" we made in our season opener. For the first time this season we will feature four of our exceptional faculty members who willingly give so much of their time to the Bryan Symphony Orchestra. The association between the BSO and Tennessee Tech University is crucial for our survival, and the contribution of time and skill by our faculty has brought about the wonderful dream first envisioned by Dr. James Wattenbarger forty years ago.

The music you will hear feature three distinct styles of composition -- from the Baroque era from the sparse orchestrations of Vivaldi and Cimarossa to the intricate complexity of J. S. Bach with the second Brandenburg Concerto. The second half of the concert --which was decided by your participation in the vote!-- will be Mozart's famous Symphony No. 40 in G minor with its impassioned opening movement and pulsating forward motion throughout. It is one of the most complex pieces Mozart ever wrote and one that stands high on every music lover's Top Forty -- which is appropriate given that it is our 40th anniversary!!

I look forward to bring this music to life for you, and hope that by November 17th we will be ready to bring more of Tchaikovsky's music to life through your contributions to the "Buy a Note" campaign.

A Message from the President

With one rousing concert and a successful Preview Luncheon and Symphony Social under our belt, we can proudly say that we're off to great start for our fortieth anniversary season! Thank you to all of you who have contributed your time and talents to get our season off to a great start. A big thank you also goes out to Gail Luna, our Executive Director, for the countless hours she gives us.

I'd like you to know we have several new BSOA Board members this season who are showing great dedication and hard work to seeing to it that the symphony moves forward and continues to be the center of cultural experience in the Upper Cumberland. Join us at our supporting events as well as the concerts, and get to know your Board. Tell them the things you'd like to see and ask how you can help. We are all supporters in our own way. What's yours?

Jan Tate, President
Bryan Symphony Orchestra Association

Greetings from the Volunteer Council

Our October social at Crawdaddy's as very successful! We had almost 70 people present, and thanks to our host, Mark bailey of Crawdaddy's we had a great time with great weather! We continue to have new members come, including some from the Crossville area! Our November social will be held at the beautiful home of Julia and Bob Lowe on Friday, November 15, 2002. Please put this date on your calendar and plan to be there and hear a review of the November 17th concert from Brendan Townsend, our BSO Music Director. The catering will be provided by Grada Casey of Grade-A-Catering. We're still looking for your membership in the Bryan Symphony Orchestra Association, and want you to be a part of our Socials. Great things are in store for the BSO this year - our Socials are planned, and we are looking to have the biggest auction yet at our March Social, which will be at the new Towne Center. You'll hear more about this Social at a later date. I want to thank my committee which consists of Evelyn Breyer, Kitty Niebuhr, Donna Quillen, Nina Lunn and Myrna Estes for all their hard work on the last Social. Please feel free to call any of us if you would like to contribute some of your time, or have any auction item ideas for us!

Additionally, I would like to thank Budweiser for always providing us with beverages for the Socials, and Brentwood Wine and Spirits for their support! We hope to see you on November 15th at the Lowe's, and if not, we wish you and yours continued blessings during the holiday season.
